Top 10 Most Unsportsmanlike Acts That I Remember
The other day I was thinking about poor sportsmanship and started to write down some examples. Before long I had quite a few and I hadn’t even consulted Google yet. I took this as a challenge and decided to try to make a list of the ten worst moments in sportsmanship that I could remember without looking them up. Obviously I needed to search for the videos and, in a few cases, had to look up some specific detail but these are all examples of an unsportsmanlike act that was so poor that I remembered it over the course of a few days without doing any research:
#10 John McEnroe hits things with his racket. I’m very surprised that I found the exact clip I remember seeing as a kid and even more surprised that John’s language is clean enough for me to link to it.
#9 Bobby Knight throws a chair. Like McEnroe’s tantrum, this isn’t the worst thing he ever did, but it sure is symbolic of the type of thing you expected from Bobby Knight.
#8- Zinedine Zidane head butts an opponent. This one made the list because it seems completely unprovoked. I’m not sure how he thought he could get away with it.
#7- George Brett’s pine tar outrage. The MLB eventually overturned the initial ruling that he was out, but not in time to keep George Brett from running around Yankee Stadium yelling at anything that moved.
George Brett’s pine tar-aided homerun I can’t embed this video, but this link shows the whole story.
#6- LeGarette Blount throws a punch after the game. My personal opinion is that that guy deserved whatever ice pack was necessary, but athlete’s shouldn’t always give punks what they deserve.
#5- Elizabeth Lambert pulls her opponent’s hair. Poor sportsmanship is taken to a whole new level when you resort to dirty play designed to hurt the opponent.
#4- Pitcher and catcher conspire to hit the umpire. I have mixed emotions about this one. I find it hard to believe that a high school pitcher has the kind of control necessary to pull this off in one toss, but the evidence is pretty clear. The umpire was contemplating a lawsuit, but I can’t find that anything ever came of it.
#3- Ron Artest goes into the stands to fight a fan. I’m not going to defend Ron like the analysts in the following video. He should have never gone into the stands, but the guy who came onto the court deserved what he got and probably more.
#2- Mike Tyson bites Evander Holyfield’s ear. To this day, Tyson still won’t admit that he was wrong. He admits that he bit Holyfield but maintains that he was simply defending himself from the head butts because he was trying to support his family.
#1- Marty McSorley hits Donald Brashear in the head with his stick. This makes the number 1 spot because it could have taken a man’s life. Brashear had a seizure on the ice and missed the rest of the season. McSorley was suspended from hockey for one year and never attempted to return. He was also convicted of assault with a weapon for his in-game attack.
