Tasting (and ranking) the Rainbow

I had a big bag of Skittles and an afternoon, so I decided to try all of the two-flavor combinations and rate them. Janet asked “Don’t you have anything better to do with your time?” to which I responded, “Yes, I have a lot of better things to do with my time, but this is what I chose to do instead.”

I used a simple 0-10 scale and was very subjective in my judging. In other words, it is my opinion so feel free to disagree. Here are my results:

Score Combination    Description
2 Green-Purple         didn’t mix well at all
3 Orange-Purple        initial taste was too bold, but got better
4 Orange-Yellow        good overall but the lemon overpowered
5 Green-Orange        not really exciting but mixed well
6 Green-Red             very smooth combination
6 Red-Yellow             the sweetest flavor with the most sour makes for a good change-up
7 Purple-Red            very fruity but the flavors are too similar to be spectacular
8 Purple-Yellow         not quite enough lemon to taste like grape lemonade but still awesome
9 Green-Yellow         lemon-lime, can’t go wrong there
9 Orange-Red           the most fruity and sweet combination

Mixability Rating    best with…     avoid mixing with…
20 Purple              yellow            green, orange
21 Orange             red                purple, yellow
22 Green               yellow            purple
27 Yellow              green             orange
28 Red                 orange

I hope to be able to do the three-skittle combinations some day, but since there are 50 it will probably be a while.
